As a data geek, what I find most compelling about the GenAI era is how easily it enables personalized interaction with data. From my experience, building a data product that people love is tough. One of the core challenges is how users interact with data—what questions they ask, how they want to slice, aggregate, apply logic, and format the information. Then comes the challenge of designing an intuitive UI/UX. Even after building applications or dashboards, you need to train users, manage change requests, and constantly add more features and granularity.
The strongest capability that LLMs bring is personalized interfaces. They can take unstructured data requests and return insights tailored to the user’s needs. Want the results in a table? No problem. Need to find outliers? Sure. Want the data in a format that’s presentation-ready? Whatever the user asks.
However, training a proprietary LLM is costly, and there’s the challenge of hallucinations, where the model generates inaccurate information. This often stems from outdated training data or lack of real-time context, undermining the credibility of your data.
A promising approach to overcome these challenges is Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). RAG translates unstructured user requests—using either predefined rules or a pre-trained LLM—into structured queries. These queries retrieve fresh, trusted data from your internal systems and knowledge bases. The LLM then processes and transforms this data into the desired Data Experience with a much lower risk of hallucinations because it’s grounded in up-to-date, accurate data.
This is a game changer. It shifts the focus from endless debates about visualization and personalization options to letting users decide for themselves, while companies can concentrate on making their data stronger and more reliable.
